Objects as history 10: 12.3.20 – Devanshi Shah

Week 10 of objects as history class started by studying Buddhism. We started by understanding what Buddhism preaches, we learnt that there was no class and cast bias and discrimination.

We saw a few sculptures like the turning the wheel of law gesture and the touching the ground sculptures, and what was interesting to know is if you see those sculptures you can understand that they had sense of human anatomy and hence the sculptures were well carved and sculpted .

Next we discussed about the architecture: The Sanchi stupa-  It has a dome like roof which is why its called a stupa as stupa means a mound like hemispherical structure. The gate of the Sanchi stupa is considered to be iconic.

We also saw the Bhaja and Ajanta caves.
