Objects as History 4: 30.1.20- Devanshi Shah.

Week 4 of objects as history class was about the Egyptian civilization.

We started by discussing as to what we know about the Egyptian civilization:

  • The pyramids
  • The Nile river
  • Afterlife of this civilization
  • Ra the god, the protector
  • Sphinx
  • Slavery
  • Mummification
  • Various objects used as symbols.

We discussed as to how this civilization was known for its three parts,

  • The old Egypt
  • The middle/ modern Egypt
  • And the new Egypt
  1. The old Egypt known for it

– pottery, pots used for storage, with interesting carvings depicting the exsistence of art and culture

– its jewellery made of bones, and various stones

  • We then saw the middle Egypt , which was  known for its paintings,

Paintings , which had some meaning and symbolism to it. Paintings which showed the development , in culture, paintings which were much more cleare, with human forms, and textured clothing, with unique borders painted on, it showed the existence of colours, maybe extracted from natural resources. Paintings which showed life after death.

  • We then saw the new Egypt  which was all about ornaments made of gold, , the first ones to master gold and use them in statues, as well as jewellery.

Second half of the class was about the introduction to our new project which was about  creating a timeline taking any one object or aspect such as , the clothes, pottery, jewellery etc of any civilization, study it in detail and create a timeline for the same.
