Sustainable systems a new subject to learn. We started off by breaking down the literal meaning of the words sustainable and then systems to understand what this subject is all about.

SUSTAINABLE:

  • Sustainable can mean eco friendly
  • Something which is prolonged without any ill effect
  • Something which is maintained
  • Something that doesn’t hamper the systems around.

SYSTEMS -can mean a group of people functioning as a whole with a set of rules and regulations , it can also mean a set of interconnecting networks or an organized scheme.

Then was asked a question, what do you mean by sustainability?

  • Sustainability can be termed as the viability of making something sustainable
  • It can mean the availability of resources at a certain rate
  • Sustainability can be termed as avoidance of depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance

Q) On what terms is the sustainability of a system maintained?

I feel there are many terms which are considered while maintaining a system:

  • the first and foremost is population
  • environment
  • economy
  • resources
  • energy
  • power
  • consumer
  • space
  • longevity of a product
  • usability
  • decomposition
  • the 3r’s- reuse, recycle, reduce

The 3 most important pillars of a sustainable system are:

  • economy
  • environment
  • society

this is how we understood as to what sustainable systems is and what goes in this topic.

CRITICAL REFLECTION:

Q) what does sustainability mean to you?

a) according to me sustainability in literal sense means the ability to sustain something for a longer time period, keeping all welfare aspects in mind. Sustainability according to me is a concept which needs to be implemented. Sustainability is the power of controlling the unnecessary wastage and controlling the harm that is causing the 3 important aspects of the systems.

Q) what are systems?

a) systems according to me means a set of things working together as a part of an interconnecting network. Systems can be also termed as an organization working according to certain set principles by keeping welfare for a longer time period in mind.

Q) what are sustainable systems?

a) according to me a group of people, or an organization working with certain set of rules and regulations keeping the 3 important aspect such  as economy, environment and social in mind, for the welfare of the society and the entire organization can be the termed as a sustainable system. Majorly when the economy, environment and social aspect are well balanced then it can be called a sustainable system. I feel just like sustainability is a concept the application of this concept leads to a sustainable system.

Q) difference between sustainability and sustainable systems?

a) sustainability is a concept whereas a sustainable system is the application of this concept. Sustainability is a viability of making something sustainable, whereas a sustainable system is one where economy, environment and social aspects are well balanced for a longer period of time.

Q) What are the other 3r’s according to you is very important?

a) – REFUSE

– REPLAN

– RETHINK

we were then given an assignment where we have to list down our least and most sustainable part or habit or activity of our entire days routine and then find out how they can largely affect our immediate surroundings and enviornment and also see hoew they affect the 3 pilars of a sustainable system and make a mindmap or chart of the same.
