2nd class of the new semester, continuing with the same subject but much more in detail and in a structured manner which leads to better understanding as to what discipline we want to choose further.
We first understood as to how our seminar and studio classes are linked and t how they go hand- in- hand and how seminar is about discussing your ideas, then structuring them and how studio is about materializing the same and building upon the same.
We then discussed about what we did in our seminar class, and how text is very important in design as it gives a voice to your work.
Post that we were given a word( DESPICABLE) which we discussed about in great detail, where we broke down the literal meaning of the word, then we jot down a few of its synonyms and understood the meaning of the word in great detail with much more clarity and understood the effective use of the word.
We started with what we know it meant, or joting down what we thought it could mean:
DESPICABLE
- A negative connotation
- Easy to hate
- Can’t stand someone
- Annoying
- Stubborn
- Not reliable
- Mean
- Selfish
- Dislike
- A person who lacks emotions
Its dictionary meaning is – deserving hatred and contempt,
Its synonyms are:
- Detestable
- Contemptible
- Loathsome
- Hateful
- Obnoxious
- Reprehensive
This is how we decoded the word in great detail , which now gives me a better understanding as to where it can be used and in what context, sometimes there are words which we fairly know what it means but not properly and we happen to use it in wrong context or where it it has less importance.
Post this we had an activity where we were divided in groups of 5 and were given a word which we had break down in detail the way we did for despicable and then we had to enact the word in class ,in such a way that the rest are able to guess the word or something closer to it.
The word our group got was PHENOMENON.
Phenomenon dictionary meaning:
– a fact or an event in nature or society especially one that is not fully understood,
-an observable event
– process
– unique and unordinary.
Synonyms:
- Occurrence
- Event
- Reality
- Fact
- Situation
- Case
- Process
- Episode
- Experience
Phenomenon can be used in various context such as a scientific context where science experiments and processes are called phenomenon, the second context is using it as an adjective to describe something or someone.
We then took the scientific context into consideration and enacted few process using certain props such as the gravitation apple falling from a tree discovery by newton,
Then the dispersion of white light into the 7 rainbow colours, spectrum, prism,
And spotting an ufo showing some existence phenomenon.
Few flaws we had were we couldn’t express phenomenon directly and it went more towards the direction of an event , also are props were very literal and scientific which couldn’t get the audience to guess phenomenon.
CRITICAL REFLECTION:
The most important thing I understood is firstly how important text is and secondly how important it is to understand a simplest word also ,to use it effectively and in a proper context.
