Space and Materiality8: 23.9.19- Shreyas More

Week 8 of space and materiality class was about making and reviewing of our final model and complete process work.

Material I used for my final model was plywood and joinery system.

  • I chose to use plywood as a material for my model because plywood was strong, stirdy, it gave a compact and filled effect which justifies my grip and its concept.
  • Ply wood also had many layers which also symbolizes the various layers of the essence of my grip , it denoted the various phases and layers of me and my brothers life and layers of our relation.

PROCESS:

I have worked with plywood using joinery to join the parts of my model.

Study of joinery:

Types of wood joinery

  • lap join = the end of a piece of wood is laid over and connected to another piece of wood. It’s the simplest and weakest joint
  • Bridle join=also known as the open mortise join
  • Dowel joint= 2 pieces of wood are joint together with dowel pins
  • Mitre joint= both pieces of wood have been joint at 45 degree
  • Box joint=interlocking joints usually perceived as box shapes
  • Dovetail joint=2 piece of wood where finger like joints are locked by diagonal cuts
  • Dado joint= also known as housing or trench joint.

I have used the DOVETAIL joinery where 2 wood structures are joint with interlocking diagonal cut fingers  receiving pressure from both directions in order to keep them strong and steady.

Experience:

I worked with wood for the very first time in this project. I enjoyed using it as a material as I got to learn a lot by using it under various wood machines.

It was a wonderful experience, learning to use all the wood machines, I can now confidently

Work with wood as a material and use the machines appropriately
