Week 2 of space and material class was about the theoretical understanding as to what space and material individually mean, what are its types as well as processes.
SPACE – space in particular means existence, freedom to move. Space is area provided.
MATERIALS– material is a way to transfer experience.
Space and material go hand in hand -That is: Registration > Experience, Notion > Conviction
The study of material and its space: Materials > Properties >Components >Performance
Types of materials:
Elements/compounds-
- Metals
- Ceramics
- Polymers- thermosetting
- Semi-conductors
- Composites
- Bio-materials
Various properties of materials:
- Mechanical
- Thermal
- Optical
- Chemical
- Radiological
- Magnetic
- Electric
Questions to be asked to a material to identify its type and nature:
- How heavy is it?
- How rough is it?
- How hard is it?
- How tough is it?
- How strong is it?
- How brittle is it?
- Is it hot / cold?
- Will it melt?
- What is its ignition temperature?
- What is the colour?
- Will it absorb / reflect light
- Is it reactive to one’s skin?
- Is it affecting your eyes?
- Does it radiate?
- Is it magnetic?
- Does it pass current?
This class gave me a detailed understanding as to what materials are actually and how they are incorporated in spaces. Also ever since I have understood its properties and types it helps me to see things and materials in a different way .
